History of Golf in Peru
Despite the best efforts, it has been extremely challenging to determine exactly when the course began to be practiced in Peru. The first references to be found, was in the early twentieth century by a group of officials from the railways and the Pacific Steam Navigation of British marketing firms. They started playing golf in what was called the Mar Brava, now the Pearl District, part of the Constitutional Province of Callao.
In 1915 this group of enthusiasts come to an agreement with the Jockey Club in Lima and transferred their love of playing to the inside of the horse racing track Santa Beatriz, where now stands the Campus Martius. This field offered better playing conditions, which made it possible to formalize a number of tournaments and resulted in "The Lima Golf Club Limited" which acquired land located in the San Isidro Count Fundo. In May 1924 the new course was inaugurated. This course is about to turn 90 and is one of the oldest in the Pacific Rim.
It should also be noted that in the city of Arequipa, under similar conditions, began to play golf and created the Arequipa Golf Club in 1918, an institution that in its long history has placed its course in three different locations before settling in its current spot at Zocabaya.
Between the late 40s and the early 60s, Lima's number of courses expanded to reach the seven that currently exists today. In other areas outside Lima, golf courses were also opened, including Hill Golf Club located at 4.364 meters which is the highest court in the world.
